London DevOps #64

About

We're running another in-person event at R3's offices in Barbican, London, our first 'traditional' event hosted at a great company's offices since before the pandemic.

As we have developed a significant online audience whilst we have been running virtual events, we will be aiming to live-stream this event too.

We don't yet have a full agenda - but please see speakers and agenda so far below:

6:30pm - Arrival

7:00pm - Introductions

7:15pm - Ejber Özkan - Streaming Euro 2020 live - Enabling scalability and improving fault isolation

The BBC’s audience has been moving from traditional broadcast to online consumption, in which the Euro 2020 Final set a new record for
BBC iPlayer. This meant our engineers wanted to avoid a major outage, as happened two years before during the 2018 World Cup Quarter Final,
which triggered a significant redesign of our workflows. Ejber will talk about scaling live streaming architecture to reliably deliver media, and re-architecting systems by switching from a pull to a push model to avoid systems being overwhelmed.

Ejber Özkan is Software Engineering Manager, Media Services – Digital Distribution at the BBC

7.50pm - Andrew Hardie - Supply Chain Integrity

The SolarWinds hack clearly demonstrated the damaging impact supply chain compromise can generate and served dramatically to raise the profile and importance of supply chain integrity. In this presentation Andrew will examine the threat points in the software creation pipeline processes, from code commit through to application deployment, highlighting the valuable contributions of Open Source initiatives and tools.

Andrew Hardie is Infrastructure Services Lead at R3.

8:30pm - Socials

We'll head over to the pub!
