DevOps Vancouver Meetup: March 2020

Spring is nearly here and so is the March DevOps Vancouver Meetup! We have a fantastic line-up of speakers and our sponsor, LoginRadius, will serve pizza and host the Meetup at their downtown offices, just one block away from Waterfront Skytrain station.

Space is limited, so please book your seat early. Please remember: update your booking if you can’t make it, so others who get waitlisted can attend in your place.

Here’s the evening’s line-up:

Melissa O’Brien – “WorkSafeBC’s Cloud Story”
Join Melissa to discuss the fun and toils of the three-year Cloud Journey at WorkSafeBC. Hear how Cloud enabled DevOps and the introduction of a common engineering system. In this interactive presentation, Melissa will share both strategic and technical lessons learned from the Cloud Platform build-out and Cloud Migration program at WorkSafeBC.

Melissa is Senior Manager of Cloud Services at WorkSafeBC. A creative problem-solver at heart, Melissa loves bringing the right people together to enable the delivery of business value while reducing the overall technical debt in complex enterprise systems. Previously an Infrastructure Technical Specialist, Melissa’s bold nature has been pivotal to the delivery of the WorkSafeBC Cloud via teams responsible for Cloud Operations and Design, the Cloud Data Warehouse and the overall Cloud Migration initiative. Melissa’s truest passion is finding the right people, clearing roadblocks to success and achieving alignment at the leadership level.

Alex Bunardzic - “When Perfect Isn’t Good Enough”
Alex has been doing software engineering since 1990. Getting exposed over time to various roles (programmer, technical lead, software architect, manager of software engineering, CTO, etc.), Alex accumulated variety of practical skills in the field of software engineering. Starting early on (2002) with Extreme Programming (XP), Alex quickly became a big proponent of agile mentality, which led him to engage in DevOps practices. He is a published author and has been invited to give talks at international high tech conferences. Alex is presently running a consulting agency and is functioning as Software Engineering Practice Lead at WorkSafeBC. His consultancy is currently focused on Test Driven Development (TDD), Continuous Integration (CI) and Service Virtualization. One of Alex’s claims to fame is that he has never been asked to provide two pieces of ID when ordering a glass of beer in a restaurant.

Kevin Lindsay – “Emerging Challenges of AWS Orchestration”
Kevin is a founder of Waterbear Cloud, software developer, and technology innovator with over 25 years of experience architecting and building software products from concept to market. He has a passion for startups and building collaborative cultures that thrive on a good challenge. For the past four years, Kevin has been architecting and implementing automated orchestration solutions for large and small companies in the financial and technology industries.

Kevin will explore the emerging challenges of AWS orchestration. He will break down common architectures and share insights into where most time is spent on DevOps. He will look at how orchestration solutions are put together and the emerging challenges they face, and review two new solutions, each taking on these challenges in their own unique way. Kevin will demonstrate how to use IaC templates and resource glue to automate DevOps processes and alleviate some common challenges such as configuration validation, DRY configuration, consistency between environments, IAM permissions and keeping IaC in sync with provisioned infrastructure. He’ll also compare the pros and cons of tools available in the market.
