DevOps Exchange - April @ Monzo

Event Details: This event is hosted by the organizer. Register for this event here →

The DevOps Exchange April will be hosted by our good friends and everyone’s favourite FinTec, Monzo in Finsbury Square on the 9th of April.

We have Direct Line Group telling us how they are challenging best practice Dogma at their new 'secret' insurance disruptor brand Darwin. Sonya from Pride in London sharing how GitHub Marketplace helped them automate and improve their workflow and how shifting left reduces costs and delays.

Yitan from Asian cloud giant Alibaba will provide an insight into how Alibaba Cloud are using independent tools to build global platforms. Closing the event, we have Chris Evans demoing a lifesaver tool from Monzo, which is designed to reduce stress and coordinate incidents in a manageable way.

As usual we'll have refreshments and food before and after, plus a tab from LinuxRecruit in the pub after we leave the venue.

Doors open at 6:30pm and talks start at 7pm.

Agenda:

7pm: Sonya Moisset, Security Engineer @ Pride in London

Keep calm and secure your CI/CD pipeline Description.

Synopsis: “Shifting left” significantly reduces costs and diminishes release delays. Continuous security validation should be added at each step from development through production to help ensure the application is always secure. We can then switch the conversation with the security team from approving each release to approving the CI/CD process and having the ability to monitor and audit the process at any time.

Around the work done with Pride in London*, learn how the GitHub Marketplace helped the team automating and improving our workflow with different tools for accessibility, code coverage, code review, code quality, security and other functionalities (alerting with Slack), and how you can apply it to your projects. (*Pride in London website is a project using Gatsby2, Contentful and Netlify)

Bio: A lifelong traveler who has lived in the Middle-East, North Africa and Asia. Most of her skills and knowledge are self-taught, and over the last 20 years, has been exploring many different programming languages, web/mobile development and cybersecurity.

7:20pm: Henrique Rodrigues, Principal DevOps @ Direct Line Group (Darwin)

Best practices considered harmful

Synopsis: Too often the term "best practice" is thrown around like a
trump card, usually followed by a smug grin. I don't think so. Dogmas
don't belong in an engineer's toolkit.

Bio: Henrique is a sysadmin with a heart of DevOps. He's been
working at Darwin, a secret project at Direct Line Group that leverages machine learning

<20 min Break for Pizza>

8pm: Yitian Xu, Solution Architect @ Alibaba Cloud UK

Multi-Cloud Enablement

Synopsis: How to use mainstream third-party tools to manage cloud services, building global cloud deployment platform.

8:20pm: Chris Evans Platform Team Lead @ Monzo

Managing Incidents at Monzo

Synopsis: Dealing with incidents can be stressful. On top of dealing with the issue at hand, on-callers are often responsible for handling comms, both internal and external, reporting, and coordinating the efforts of other engineers. To reduce the pressure and cognitive burden on its engineers, Monzo built a tool to help coordinate and report incidents. Chris will walk through how we use it to make incidents awesome.

Bio: Chris Evans leads the Platform and On-call Teams at Monzo. As an engineer with a coding background, he now finds himself honing his email-writing skills.

8:30pm – continue the discussion then head to the pub!

Hope to see you there!
